OUR GOALS FOR REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP:

Working through Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) we plan to sponsor a family from among the ‘neglected refugees’. These include two types: The Canadian government has sponsored refugees from Syrian refugee camps, however, Christian Syrians are not safe or welcome in these camps. Thus, private sponsorship is the only option for their resettlement. Also, government sponsorship of refugees from other conflict zones (Angola, Nigeria, Sudan, Darfur, Somalia, etc.) has been capped, leaving private sponsorship as the only option. These people are in extreme need having no secure home, no money, and minimal food and shelter and we have so much to share.

Sponsorship is about hope in the face of desperation!

YOU CAN HELP WITH FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:

The estimated cost of sponsoring a refugee family for the usual one-year period is a financial commitment of approximately $30,000.00. Before we can submit our sponsorship application to CLWR, we need $10,000.00 in the bank, as well as pledge commitments for the remaining $20,000.00. Each of the five churches is responsible for $6,000.00. We need to obtain the actual money or a pledge commitment (over a period of one year) by September 30, 2016.

HOW DOES MY CASH DONATION WORK?

If you are a member of one of the five congregations, your donation will go into the offering envelope in your home congregation, as an addition to your regular offering. On your offering envelope, indicate that portion of your offering as ‘Refugee Sponsorship’. This money will be set aside within the local parish until it is required by the Sponsorship committee.

If you are not a member of the five congregations and would like to assist us in sponsoring a refugee family, you may make a tax deductible donation online at CANADA HELPS:

YOU CAN HELP BY VOLUNTEERING:

We also need a network of volunteers to support our refugee family through their first year. There will be three key volunteer groups:

  1. Finance committee to ensure the money is allocated properly to support the refugee family, i.e. utilities, food, clothing.
  2. Housing committee to find suitable and affordable housing and to ensure it is furnished.
  3. Services committee to ensure the family knows where to find medical and dental services, obtains assistance in enrolling in language courses, finds suitable clothing, knows how to operate the household appliances, and so on, as required.

Those willing to volunteer may contact Pastor Philip Penrod.

DURATION:

Our financial commitment to the family is for one year. It is not unusual for a refugee family to become economically self-sufficient within the first year of sponsorship. However, relationships and friendships last forever, so our contact with the family is anticipated to be on-going, even after the year of sponsorship is over.

Refugees in Somalia
At Sheder, Ethiopia, UNHCR camps provide temporary refuge for Somalis displaced by conflict in their homeland. Gathering water is an ever-present task for children.
